Oulu Artless Day Symposium
Oulu’s year as European Capital of Culture is a special one: instead of the traditional Oulu Arts' Night, Oulu Artless Day Symposium will be held on Thursday, 20 August. Cultural associations and artists in Oulu first began to organize Oulu Arts' Night in 2008 in response to public claims that “nothing ever happens in Oulu”. In a single evening, they demonstrated the richness of Oulu’s art scene. In 2026, the city is filled with art of many kinds every week, and those who create and experience art may now need a day off rather than yet another busy event night.
We invite people of all kinds from Oulu to gather at Oulu's Central Library Saari, in the Pakkala Hall, to discuss what kind of city Oulu would be without art. The symposium will highlight perspectives from children and young people, working‑age adults, and seniors, while considering the significance of art and culture for different groups of city residents – from long‑time locals to people who have only recently arrived in the city or the country.
The day will consist of keynote talks, panel discussions and audience comments. There will also be lunch and coffee breaks – as long as the food itself is not artistic. The symposium begins at 10:00 and concludes around 17:00, after which people are encouraged to spend time with alternatives to art, such as various forms of physical activity.
As part of the symposium, views from all Oulu residents of the city and of the art are being collected. You can respond to the Oulu Artless Day survey by clicking this link. >>
The Oulu Artless Day Symposium will also be streamed live and recorded, making it possible to follow remotely via Northern Cultural Stream (Pohjoinen kulttuurivirta) channel. In connection with the symposium, the cultural magazine Kaltio will publish its river‑themed number 4/2026.
The Oulu Artless Day Symposium is part of the official Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture programme. It will be followed by the three‑day Oulu Delta Art Days weekend, during which artists from Oulu and the wider Oulu2026 region will perform in and along the Oulu River estuary, from Turkansaari to Nallikari Beach.
