One from the Heart: Reprise
The neon lights of motels, casinos, and nightclubs glow in garish, unnatural hues as recently separated Hank (Frederic Forrest) and Frannie (Teri Garr) search for solace in the sleepless night of Las Vegas. The raspy, bittersweet songs of Tom Waits accompany and narrate their wandering hearts. Somewhere far off on the horizon shimmers the paradise island of Bora Bora, and with the break of a new day comes the question: to leave or to stay?
Director legend Francis Ford Coppola has never shied away from sacrificing dollars or man-hours in pursuit of his grand cinematic visions. In the case of One from the Heart, the budget was poured into massive studio-built sets—an ambitious gamble that nearly bankrupted Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios. The result is a triumphant celebration of artifice: a modern American fairytale as (un)real as the imaginary city it conjures.
