Friday's Poetic-Music Muse Club

Poetry Music Board

The Poetry Music Board convenes for the first time in Oulu and at the Muusajuhlat festival! In this fresh take on the familiar poetry and music review panels from radio and television, both new and slightly older Finnish lyrical-musical recordings will be discussed and dissected. The works will be reviewed by a three-member panel. The event will be hosted by Kari Ensio Miettunen.

Helena Juntunen: The Jewel Aria

To ensure the multidisciplinary spirit of Muusajuhlat remains present, opera singer Helena Juntunen will reinforce the heavenly union of word art and music by performing the Jewel Aria made famous by the opera diva Bianca Castafiore from the Tintin comics. The only song Castafiore performs in the Tintin stories is the Jewel Aria from Gounod’s opera Faust."Ah, I laugh to see myself so beautiful in this mirror!" The performance will be introduced by comic scholar Reijo Valta.

Helena Juntunen is described as "a shameless diva, a cosmopolitan who loves her home, a career mother, a former drunk, and a soprano who has conquered stages around the world" — excerpt from the description of Sometimes Too Much, Always Too Little (Otava 2024), a biography about Juntunen.

njihe

The music project of Elle Kokkonen, originally from Partakko, Inari, and now based in Oulu. The soundscape features acoustic guitar and vocals with a psychedelic touch, while the lyrics explore obsessions and beautiful, yet raw, symbolism. njihe’s long-anticipated second studio album was released in May.

Space Poetry Music: Karkia Walo

Karkia Walo is a duo combining word art and music, formed by two sci-fi researchers and artists: poet Ansa Walo (Aino-Kaisa Koistinen) and musician Johannes Karkia (Jari Käkelä).

In their performance Kiertoradalla (Space Debris), poetry inspired by science news about space travel and science fiction is interwoven with a cosmic soundscape created using modular synthesizers. The piece explores humanity’s ambition to travel into space and questions the cost of these pursuits. Karkia Walo’s poetry zines will also be available for purchase at the event.
