Hyperreality finds its natural apex in commercial films, where desires conjured from nothing by Don Draper and likes give birth to dreams and identities that endlessly imitate one another. But what happens when a dose of auteurship is introduced—by a director whose style, despite countless attempts to mimic it, remains virtually inimitable?

The late David Lynch (1946–2025)—filmmaker, visual artist, and musician—has been celebrated in retrospective programs around the world since his passing in January. Oulu Music Video Festival joins in paying tribute to the American visionary by highlighting his lasting legacy in music and music video. The screening features Lynch-directed music videos for other artists as well as for his own experimental compositions. Fittingly, the program opens with a reel of Lynch’s most iconic commercial work—from Adidas to Playstation.
