Series of silent films

4.8.—18.8.2019 Kulttuuritalo Valve

With a live music soundtrack, silent films are taking over festivals everywhere, but Oulu has so far had them on rare occasions. In November around Halloween each year the IIK! Horror Movie Festival sells out its silent films without exception as people gather to enjoy the unique experience and atmosphere of past decades. Oulu August Festival now wants to offer audiences a unique cinematic experience.

CHARLES CHAPLIN: THE GOLD RUSH
Live soundtrack by The Corridoors of Sound
Sunday 4.8. at 16.00.

The series is opened by Charlie Chaplin’s Gold Rush with a live music soundtrack by The Corridoors of Sound Collective. The comedy classic is shown as a 16-millimeter copy owned by Oulu Film Centre, so the sound of the projector is entwined smoothly into the music collective’s soundscape. The Corridoors of Sound is a multidisciplinary group, and in this show, the movie might have a soundtrack made up of movement as well as sound.

JEAN EPSTEIN: THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER
Live soundtrack by Radiopuhelimet
Monday 12.8. at 19.00

Valvesali will fill up with Radiopuhelimet interpretation of the soundscape of Jean Epstein’s The Fall of the House of Usher. The Oulu-based band first interpreted a soundtrack to a movie based on Edgar Allan Poe’s novel in 2007 in their uncompromising and relentless style, and finally, a long-awaited second serving will occur.

ROBERT WIENE: THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI

Lau Nau, Topias Tiheäsalo and Hermanni Ylitepsa create the soundtrack to probably the most celebrated piece of German expressionism. Laura Naukkarinen a.k.a. Lau Nau is one of Finnish music scene’s most original artists and she has released five records and provided soundtracks to silent films all around the world, most recently in San Francisco, Helsinki and Anères in France.
