Around 20,000 visitors attended the Delta Life spectacle in Oulu
The Delta Life festival weekend, held on August 27–29, gathered approximately 20,000 visitors to Pokkisenpuisto park — the birthplace of Oulu. The event also attracted international audiences and media. The free-admission event was the main event and climax of the European Capital of Culture summer.
The three-day carnival featured the 30th anniversary World Air Guitar Championships and the multidisciplinary Delta Life show.
”We succeeded in combining Oulu’s delta city history with northern high culture and popular culture. The journey that began in 2016 culminated in a shared, spectacular experience. Reclaiming urban space and the landscape through art creates visions for the future,” says Jukka Takalo, scriptwriter and artistic director of Delta Life.
The event was streamed live each day. The stream generated 50,000 views over the three days and remains available to watch on demand at www.deltalife.fi. It was broadcast by several domestic media outlets and globally by sources including the Associated Press news agency.
The original work, built on Oulu-based roots, sparked lively discussion among the audience. The performance was described as a grand, impactful, and touching creation. The performers and stage design received praise for being world-class. As multi-layered art should, the performance also raised questions and wonder. A viewer's guide was offered in advance to assist with interpretation. Audiences can still delve into the layers of the spectacle as the recording and the viewer's guide remain available on the website.
The event was produced by the Oulu Cultural Events Association, which coordinates the Oulu August Festivals. The executive producer of the event was Anu Lähteenmäki.
The artistic cast of the show included Marzi Nyman (composition of the entire work, electric guitar), string quartet Meta4, Oulu All Star Big Band conducted by Jukka Eskola, Screaming Men's Choir, Lumo Company circus artists Hanna Moisala, Anniina Peltovako, Kamilla Nisso, and Saana Leppänen, dancers Maria Autio, Pinja Grönberg, Mia Jaatinen, Minna Kaaronen, Viktoria Radin, Alina Sakko, Heli-Maria Latola, dance students from Oulu University of Applied Sciences Iida Ahola, Tomi Ihanus, Saana Mäkelä, Helka Saraperä, Moona Soronen, Janina Viero, as well as international air guitarists Justin "Nordic Thunder" Howard, Aline "Devil's Niece" Westphal, Nicole "MomJeans Jeanie" Sevcik, and Kurt "Shred Lasso" Brown.
Delta Life is a multi-year project by the Oulu Cultural Events Association, a third-sector operator based in Oulu, culminating in the Delta Life spectacle. The association bears primary responsibility for the production. Key subcontractors were Sun Effects, responsible for stage design, light, and video art, and Ramirent, which constructed the stage.
The main funder of the festival weekend is the Oulu Culture Foundation. Additional grants were awarded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and Teosto.
Delta Life also encompasses other art and development projects across the region along ancient waterways. The An Artist is Born in the Delta project encouraged young artists in the early stages of their careers. The Toast to Words and Poetry project, produced in collaboration with the Oulu Writers' Association, together with the Northern Cultural Stream project, highlighted local stories. Delta Life also includes the Saavuta project, which promotes accessibility for cultural events, and the Oulujoki River cultural tourism project. Some of these projects will continue until 2028.
